Set date for Philmont Crew meetings, at least two more before July. Agenda items for Crew Meetings:

  • Review health form and physical requirements, also tetanus shot.
  • Set physical fitness goals and fitness training required for all participants. Suggest min. 45 minutes walking 5 times a week. Walk up hills and climb stairs and bleachers.
  • Review Crew positions have been set and entered into Philmont Gateway website. Philmont is entirely scout lead, the adults are just along for fun and for training prior to the trip. The crew leader will not be asking the adults what comes next, where do we go here, anything. The adults will not be offering opinions except when an imminent injury can be avoided. The crew meetings and shakedown hikes prior to the trip need to ready the scouts to lead 100% at Philmont. At Philmont all camp interactions are with the crew leader, not the adults.
  • Determine final trip cost and set due dates for payment. Flight is now reserved. Bus reserved.
  • Prepare crew gear. Determine which crew gear will be from Philmont. Fuel for stoves. See this link for more information. https://filestore.scouting.org/filestore/philmont/pdf/ShakeDownGuideP1.pdf
  • Determine tent assignments, review tents to be used.
  • Help scouts with personal trek clothes and gear.
  • Help scouts with travel clothes and gear.
  • Crew custom T-shirt, design it, make it. Wicking fabric, not cotton. Blankshirts.com
  • Review skills to cover in shakedown trips. Include water purification, bear skills, Philmont meals and how to prepare and clean up, trash protocol, campsite requirements, packing skills, navigation and trek familiarization.
  • Purchase updated maps.
